Montague Expedition - 2004
|
In July, 2004, the entire Williams Soaring
Center glider operation reloacted to Siskiyou County Airport
for about a week. The nearby town is called Montague, which
is adjacent to Yreka, in Northern California. A similar
expedition had been conducted in 2003
On Tuesday, July 20th, several shuttles were
made from Williams to Siskiyou in order to position all
of the equipment. About half of the people who arrived after
Wednesday stayed in motels in the city of Yreka, everyone
else camped at the airport. The glider population increased
steadily from Wednesday through Saturday, and then diminished
to about six ships by the following Tuesday. The last flights
were conducted on Wednesday, July 28th.
Here is a quick summary of the flying. More
details and graphics may be seen on The
Flying Page
-
Flying
began on Wednesday, July 21, with about six single seat
gliders launching, and multiple flights in the two place
ships.
-
Thursday
was our first "race", but only a few flight
recorder traces were turned in.
-
On
Friday, ten ships started out, and eight completed the
course. Blow by blow description may be seen on the flying
page.
-
Saturday
and Sunday saw more races.
-
Monday was lead and follow day. Larry Hood started from
Gunsight, and 818, EH, PK, 7H all followed.
-
A
few more single seat flights on Tuesday.
-
Dual
flights were flown every day. The ASK-21, Duo Discus,
and ASH-25 were flying multiple flights every day.
There were probably about 30 people who came
to Montague to fly this week. Most photos were taken on
saturday night, but there were others snapped at various
times. The bottom of this page and the continuing pages
are but a few of the snapshots taken.
