The VSA established a scholarship fund in 1988.  The idea of having a scholarship was a result of the vast number of monetary contributions that were received by the VSA in the memory of Rex’s father George ‘Doc’ Mayes.  The initial funding for the scholarship account was from those contributions.  Initially, the annual scholarship award was in the amount of $500 each year.  The scholarship was listed, along with many other programs that the local high school students were encouraged to apply for in order to offset college expenses.  Applicants were required to show admittance to college and to express their interest in aviation at the time of the application.  Although the initial awards were in the amount of $500 each, that amount was decreased to $200 annually as the years went by.

The scholarship program was administered from 1988 to 2011, a span of nearly 23 years, but was an award was not done every year due to lack of funds.  The initial funding was depleted in the late 1990’s and after that time the VSA collected voluntary contributions from members in order to fund additional scholarships and periodically make an award.  The last scholarship was awarded in 2011.  The annual scholarship program was terminated in 2012.
